I have a personal site: "myfirstandlastnamewithoutspaces".com - and I am guilty of keeping a "/" and a "/blog/" alive concurrently. The "/" page just has some cheesy merchandise for sale, along with a link to the blog. Why?

I guess I do it for personality reasons. The site root represents the "root" me. The domain is registered for the next 100 years, so even after I'm dead it'll be mine for decades. Today, I'm selling merch there, and someday that "/" will show my obituary or something. By keeping the two fronts open, I'm saying that there's me, then there's the blog which is just one of many potential interfaces with me. Never mind that the /blog/ is 99% of the site. The blog is a subset of the whole, not the whole itself. When I want a forum, it will become "/forum/", and when I need a store it will be "/store/". If someone's linking to me, they'll link to "/", and if someone wants to link to my blog, they will now and always have to link to "/blog/"

And... I don't want to create a 302 Temporary Redirect from "/" to "/blog/" - that defeats the purpose and moots the statement I'm making. Perhaps my link love will suffer as a result, but (for now) I'm unconvinced that it needs to change.

So sugarrae, how much are you charging for an ad placement? I have a non-profit project that would benefit from a square button in your slutroll.

When we switched over to semantic, static URLs in February, our traffic took a 10-15% upswing from Google right away. I believe SEW implemented something similar right around that time and reported an over 20% increase in search traffic.

Here's a random question from your design slave: ;)

I read in your friend Chrissie's interview with you that you're a big proponent of social networking as link builders.

Will we hear from you on how to leverage Facebook, specifically (versus other social networking platforms) on link building, or is Facebook not well equipped for this? Is a mere presence on Facebook, that links to one's site, a boost?
