PubCon Wrap Up - Better Late Than Never
Internet Marketing Conferences
If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my feed or subscribe to me on Twitter, which is updated on a more frequent - and more meaningless - basis.
I got back in from pubcon on Saturday, but then attended the Maimi at Buffalo game on Sunday (where it hailed, snowed and the Bills kicked ass) and spent most of Monday and Tuesday catching up from being gone. Thus I’m late with the wrap up… sue me. ;-)
First things first… I’d highly recommend you download my presentations from pubcon if you liked them as this past pubcon will be the last time I ever give them. I’ll still be doing my site audit/clinic/review panels as long as the various conference organizers let me do them, but this pubcon marks my last “formal presentation” with a powerpoint and ten minute speech I’ll be doing anytime in the near or distant future.
This is a me decision and not a decision made by pubcon or any other conference I’ve spoken at. I talk fast. I’m well aware of this downfall. Especially when I’m excited or “into” the topic of discussion, as I always am with seo. I’ve tried to slow down, but within a minute or two, I’m back to full Sugarrae. ;-)
In an attempt to help make up for my speaking speed, I make my slides pretty “full” so they can be downloaded later and you can still get most of the information discussed from them - enough to put the info to successful use. The presentations take me several hours to do because of it. And because, I’m told, the information in my presentations is pretty useful, I’ve been asked to return to all of the conference series I’ve ever done, even though my speaking speed is a bit faster than most speakers.
However, after coming home to read complaints about my speaking speed yet again this year after spending several hours of my time making the presentations that I think contain valuable information, my time and money flying out to, staying at and attending the conferences and the effort of speaking at them (mind you, I rarely take on consulting clients - as campy as it sounds, I speak purely for branding and to give back to the community), I’m retiring from “formal presentations”.
That said, I had a decent time this year. Shouts to:.
- Georgie “a loss is a win in my book” Kepnick
- Nick “about that money I gave you earlier” Raba
- Jimmy “I am not buying you dinner” Furland
- Chris “som-li-air aside, you’re one in a billion” Snape
- Michael “I was holding my breath while watching” Gray
- Jane “great, I *do* look twelve with baby fat” Copland
- Becs “I’m a latina flat top” Kelley
- Lisa “I so shouldn’t have said hi to you” Barone
- Todd “you ditch me, I ditch you” Malicoat
- Marc “Weeeeeeee” Levin
- Rand “I will never blog about you again” Fishkin
- Adam “eh, who the fuck cares” Young
- Neil “I’ll get your badge, go, go, go!” Marshall
- Dixon “There’s no way I’m moderating Rae” Jones
- Tamar “dude, I lost nine dollars!” Weinberg
- Joe “I’m pinning his business card to the wall” Morin
- Roger “we should do a nightcap” Montti
- Dwight “unlike you, I have to work a booth tomorrow” Zahringer
- John “thumbs up or thumbs down” Coronella
- Chris “I’ve already been kicked out twice” Hooley
- Vanessa “I don’t want to know any more about last night” Fox
- Markus “what up rae-z” Urban
- Frank “where the hell is stripper pooh” Watson
- Greg “fancy seeing you here” Cohn
- Dave “look, you don’t argue with Sugarrae” Rohrer
- Wayne “hi, I’m the CTO of Merchant Circle” Yamamoto
- Robin “I was expecting something about scraping” Liss
- Aaron “I always knew you weren’t stupid” Chronister
- Matt “you are just like your blog in person” Stoddart
I’m sure I’m missing people. I’m sorry if you’re one of them. See yas next time folks.

OK, I haven’t heard you speak.
But I’ve been on phone conferences with you.
And as a person who is all about efficiency, I gotta say, I’m into the fast talking. And I have to wonder about the people who can’t “keep up.”
I respect your decision to do this…but on behalf of those of us who do fly through sentences, I’d like to say thanks for not simply catering to those who complain. You shouldn’t have to slow down. At least no one falls asleep when YOU are presenting.
you don’t talk fast in fact you’re one of the few people who talks at normal speed. It’s the rest of the world that talks slow. Speed it and spit it out already people ;-)
That’s kind of bullshit that people would complain about something like that.
I don’t want to sound like I am kissing your ass or anything, but I heard you present at PubCon Boston and Vegas and you were easily one of the top handful of presenters at both shows
Sounds to me like some people need to cowboy up and quit bitching
WELL then, we will just have to listen to you speak in dark alleys and secret hideaways or over an intimate candlelit dinner ;)
I thoroughly enjoyed your presentations and the amazing amount of information in them. As for the speed, I never thought it was a problem.
Rock on.
Bummer, :^(
Don’t take it personal. I got a few complaints like that at SMX Travel. One blogger said I had the most useful and actionable information of the day but was a terrible speaker because I wanted to share more information than time would allow.
Hopefully… what he was trying to say was that he wished that they had given me more time to speak. Who knows?
Well, the thing is, I don’t particularly care for giving powerpoint speeches… I like the QA and clinic/review panels where I get to think on my feet and do my thing. I definitely try and put too much information into them. I’ll still be doing site reviews, QA stuff, etc at conferences, but since I don’t care for powerpoints and it appears people like to complain about them, so away they go… why do something I don’t like to get complained at? ;-)
Yep, I got some interesting feedback about the caricature on my business card. Most of it was in the form of backhanded compliments like, “There’s no way you’re that ugly!”
Don’t worry about the people who say you speak too quickly. They think too slowly.
Oh if it only that shout out weren’t so true ;)
So glad you’re not one of my transcription clients -lol- you speed freak! Just teasin ;) Pooey on them if they want to complain rather than learn.
weeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Rachel, :)
Your presentation was great I couldnt see you that much because I was taking notes.
It’s not you, people are slow, retarded or hung over.
LMAO… if you’re going to annoy the hell out of me, at least spell it right: Rachael :P
I got to say, I would mush rather hear a fast talker with a great presentation than a slow talker with any type of presentation any day. People who talk slow make me sleepy.
Okey i just read the linked complaining sites, and have to say they all were a bit funny and make me think if you really talk that fast or the guys don’t type fast enough. In either case, would have loved to hear your speech.
On another note - Moderating you would have felt like herding cats Rae! :) So glad Michael stood up to the pitch and thanks again for another great site clinic session. I like them :)
Also - I thought your speaking was great. It’s just the bloggers that can’t type fast enough and have to do the next blog on the next session that have trouble. They should listen more. Type less.
Dixon.
Rae, it’s not your fast talk.
It’s their slow brains! :-P
