"Both are lame when done wrong and can be amazingly effective when done right". Very true...link baiting can annoy or please your audience. I find it most successful when the main objective is NOT to sell something. Anyway, thanks for the great article.

I am very inspired by the first on “Promos & Trailers”. This is unique concept for blog promotion I have not seen any where but it’s really effective. If it can work for movies and music album then it can also work for blog, why not.

Opening up your blog world with a few well written articles submitted to Ezine or other article directories would be a good idea. You are guaranteed a few visitors that are spot on for what you blog about, so the chance of them becoming a follower of your blog is already pretty high.

Hi Rae,

Great post, especially loved the "Street Team" idea as it really resonated with me. I know someone who tried a similar concept, getting students to post stickers with his domain name all over the city he lived in.

Soon there were stickers on walls, landmarks and tourist spots, it even got mentioned in a regional paper.

Suffice to say, he saw a massive increase in traffic, although he did suffer a bit of backlash as a result. The overall publicity he received far outweighed the negative sentiment though, so he's put this down as a successful campaign.

I appreciate your analogy about actors and musicians. As a photographer, I've used many of the same tactics and they have served my blog well.

Great interview at pubcon, I like how you started out with "just a webpage"... I guess the journey starts with a single step. eh?

@SEO consultant nothing really "special". I roused a tweet campaign to get problogger to let me guest post on his new TwiTip blog, when I guest posted on copyblogger, I pitched my idea to Brian but he knew me enough to know I knew what I was doing on the topic area I pitched. Outside of that, I haven't "guest posted" much myself as far as Sugarrae - but we do for a lot of commercial sites we own. It usually just comes down to contacting people and pitching an idea... if it is a BIG site, you may wanna NOT ask for commitment.

For example... you might send an email and say "I'd love to guestpost. Here is my potential topic. I was wondering if you were open to guest bloggers - if so, I'd love to send you the article I mentioned for you to read over. If you don't end up using it, no hard feelings and I will publish it on my own blog." - this lets them see your work (if unknown to them) without committing to publishing it and a possible sticky situation if they don't like it.

As someone who gets guest blogging requests from others a lot, I've found writing on a topic of interest to me but that isn't my specialty is more likely to catch my interest. I'm not likely to have someone guest blog on link development, but analytics or video promotion would totally excite me enough to say yes to at least reading the potential post.

Great perspective. I saw you link to the blog herald about becoming a guest blogger. I was wondering if you had any "special" tips.

@Jason Green - agreed... if you come to me with one post looking for a link to your blog, a blogroll link, etc, it isn't going to happen - I want a little proof you're around. We usually get at least a month or two under our belt before we start actively seeking links/exposure/advertising for a brand spanking new blog. However, that doesn't stop you from starting to heavily seek out guest blogging gigs from day 1 (or even pre day 1 as with the promos and trailers section above).

So, in summary, a month or two of posts before you start finding people to link to or promote you and don't wait a single second to get yourself out there promoting it via guest posts etc.

My two cents...
