Really that's terrible. Indeed gaining affiliates should be through the publisher's valuable product. Not through ruses like that.

I have also been approached by affiliate's trying to recruit me. Mostly they seem spammy and I just ignore them. Many are very persistant though.

A lot of merchants try to transition salespeople into affiliate managers and recruiters without any real training. They don't know the technical side, don't understand what affiliates do, don't grok web marketing and often come at like they're pushing a monster truck ralley instead of a business relationship. Pretty annoying...

I didn't see anything about posting related links in your comment policy, so hope it's cool to post the URL of my own spin on bad recruiting:

They were running an indie program in house.

I didn't and won't reveal the name simply because I have a live and let live mentality and believe strongly in Karma. :)

Wow. I don't think it's funny as much as an indication of the wild wild west nature of the web and how few protections or privacy rights really exist for affiliates and consumers alike.

Plus Simply more evidence of the very real, less-than-savory secrets of the behind-the-scenes workings -- affiliates have every reason to be skeptical and distrustful of how their (and their customer info) will be used until proven otherwise.

My curiosity is more than picqued and it kicks in my natural inclination toward giving consumers/affiliates more information, toward protecting them, not the ones who conduct themselves so unethically. Why shield or protect such unsavory charactors?

Is there any reason you didn't post if not the name of the person who called you at least the company/site of the merchant they represented -- i.e. providing something more identifiable that throws the curtain open a bit more, some additional transparency to warn affiliates and consumers?

Can you provide at least a few more facts: Do they have their own in-house affiliate program or by any chance do they outsource their stuff to any of the big players like CJ or Linkshare or .... whatever?

just thinking out loud as it were -- these are some of the concerns that occurred to me as soon as I read about your very enlightening (should-not-be-surprising) experience.

and if you don't want to share it on your site, how about an off the record share -- I'll be happy to get the word out 'off the record' and unlike those scumbags, I'll completely protect your confidentiality.

That is just too funny. Reminds me of the good old days when the "SEO Companies" would call telling me how to improve my rankings with meta tag keywords.

Ah good stuff....you rock Rae, I probably would have done the same thing had I stayed on the phone that long lol.

Rae, I'm still laughing ... I'll probably be laughing for days to come. Wait until you get the fourth and fifth call from some other sales guys at that company because this knucklehead entered all your contact info into their database without noting that you don't wish any more contact from them. That's when it gets reeeeeeaaaally good!!!

Hi Rae, 1st time reading your blog and glad I discovered it. Since I'm an affiliate marketing consultant it gave me a couple good belly laughs! I try to teach merchants and AM's how NOT to do it. This blog entry is a great example of a couple great don'ts. Thanks for the chuckles. I'll blog about this next week.
