I got pretty excited about FB Pro but my excitement was short lived. After testing some ads with the most seemingly laser-targeted demographics, I can say that the volume and CTR are terrible and INTENT is just not there.

Methinks MSN overpaid.

Rae,
Truly Facebook, MySpace, et. al., represent a wealth of opportunities for behavorial targeting because the incredible amount of information freely available can help make advertising extremely relevant; I feel we are already seeing the benefit of this, such as with Slide.com, which apparently is experiencing a 2-5% CTR. Additionally, you presented many great ideas concerning the use of this data.
More along the lines of my post, I feel I am trying to aim for an "evolution" of social networking revenue models, because although ads can generate a great deal of money (cough*Google*cough), I feel it rarely puts a company in a position to enjoy great margins. And after the last .com bust, I feel investors are looking for a diversified set of strong revenue streams to feel safer with their investment. So, monetizing a site with advertising can be done, and can be successful, but I feel other models need to appear to take these sites to the next level business-wise... hence the difficulty.

But no matches for gold panning, prospecting, treasure hunting, rockhounding, etc. Come on Facebook, I know there are at least six of us on Myspace...

I think that's why Digg and Facebook are going with Microsoft. They're less ethical regarding the use of users' data. They'll just use it, no questions asked.

Excellent ideas. I think that's one of the primary reasons Micro$oft bought a stake in them. The level of demographic targeting with Facebook is outstanding. I did some undergrad financial aid affiliate stuff and it kicked ass because no one else was doing it at the time. Then they shut down the multiple flyer loophole and it became more work than I had time for but there's still plenty of untouched space.
