Facebook No Longer Wants Random Play

Facebook

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my feed or subscribe to me on Twitter, which is updated on a more frequent - and more meaningless - basis.

There was a change at Facebook recently that seems to allude to a change in focus. For a long time, in the “looking for” area, there have been two options that often made people laugh when they saw them… “random play” and “whatever I can get”… but those options have now been *removed* and have been replaced with “networking”.

Facebook Overtakes MySpace - For a Moment - and Some Fun Statistics

Facebook

When I saw a friend invite from Brian Prince today, I thought “wow, maybe it’s time to check Facebook’s traffic standings” and did a quick check on Alexa. Sure enough, as I predicted about this time last year, Facebook (now six) has eclipsed MySpace (now seven), albeit slightly, and temporarily - for now - in the Alexa rankings.

Facebook Videos You Should Watch

Facebook

Instead of spending your weekend surfing the net or catching up on all the latest blogger debates/slamfests/bullshit, maybe you could take some time to do something that will actually increase your knowledge base. The topic for today is Facebook and below are some videos you should take the time to watch.

“Analysis” is Not Equal to “Basic Statistics and Assumption”

Facebook

My wordpress dashboard showed that a blog was linking to mine with a post entitled: “Analysis of blogs who opened a Fb group”… however, when I clicked through, what I found was basic statistics and assumption on seo blogs with Facebook groups. He ended the “analysis” of the Sugarrae Facebook group with the following comment:

Facebook Expands Targeting Opportunities for Advertisers

Facebook

I spotted Patrick Ruffini referencing a post about Facebook demographics in his twitter feed today and was surprised to see the detail they had on a chosen set of demographics. Turns out, they were able to compile those demographics via the interface on the flyer creation page on Facebook.

The Updated Unofficial and Smartass Guide to Using Facebook

Facebook

When I originally wrote the Facebook guide, I didn’t expect it to be quite the “resource” it turned out to be. But, it ended up being one and I’ve had many requests to update the guide since a lot of features have been added since these Facebook instructions were originally published in March. So, here it is… the updated guide.

More on the Compare People Premium Service

Facebook

As most of you know, I was quite pissed off to find out that the compare people application over at Facebook was now selling details of the rankings it had promised on the application page would be anonymous.

The nosy as hell whore couldn’t pass up the opportunity to see exactly what the app was “publishing” for premium users before uninstalling the app, and since he’s also busy as hell, he forwarded me all of the the screenshots. Below is a small sampling… please note, in the who he won and lost against, I blurred out the pics and names because, well, I do have a very small heart, very occasionally… tell anyone and die. ;-)

Compare People Facebook App Pulls a Bait and Switch?

Facebook

If you’ve been utilizing Facebook a lot, you’ve probably noticed a lot of your friends using the compare people application. What is it? Well, it’s an app created by Ivko Maksimovic that allows you to compare two friends on random questions… everything from “who is more tech-savvy” to “who would you rather sleep with”. And tons of my friends have been using it.

Nine Reasons You Should Be Using and Watching Facebook

Facebook

At the beginning of the year, I did a meme I had been tagged for by Kim for predictions for the new year. One of the predictions I made was the following:

“I think Facebook will start emerging as a prime social networking choice for the over twenty crowd. I always hated Myspace but I’m a fanatical Facebook user.

People have asked me why I like it so much better… better features, a lack of ability to put horrid graphics and machine freezing midis on the pages and it seems a bit more secure and networking friendly to me. Plus, photo capabilities, event capabilities – for various reasons, Facebook is a social networking site I actually use. I think it’s the Myspace for the twenty-thirty generation and expect to see it pick up steam.”
