So, I said a while ago that blogging about SEO all the time bores me. And I made an attempt to do some more personal blogging after that. But, there is no denying it - having my blog attached to my “professional persona” prevents me from saying a lot of what is on my mind. A lot of you are crossovers from my old blog, which was purely personal in nature. You probably know more about me than my dad would like. ;-)
So, it leaves me with a dilemma. On the one hand, I love doing all of the SEO type interviews. And I like making an occassional post on industry stuff when I have something that really needs to be said.
On the other hand, I miss having a place to blog about my thong showing and how I accidentally IM’ed a porn domain to my dad on instant messenger. I miss saying fuck. The two worlds, simply cannot merge - at least in any way that doesn’t leave companies shy of letting me post their interviews here or make me feel like I’m constantly being watched.
So what is a girl to do? That’s where you guys come in…
I’m taking an informal poll. So, what should I do about my blogging situation?
Is your feeling…
1. Leave the blog as is - you only care about my thoughts on SEO and the occassional personal fodder, that is appropriate for the business realm. Also known as: An SEO blog rules!
2. You are a crossover from the old blog, which you loved, and you wish to god I would ressurect it and who cares what happens to this site. Also known as: Bring back the thongs!
3. You think the blog should be split - keep sugarrae for the interviews and SEO posts and have a second, personal blog - best of both worlds! Also known as: You’re crazy anyway, split the blog, like your personality.
4. You really hate anything I write and if you had a life, you wouldn’t even be reading this right now. Also known as: I haven’t even had a shower today and I care about your blog why?
5. You think I think too much and that Ask is happy to appear on the same site that talks about whether or not peeing in the shower is an acceptable thing to do. Also known as: I’m in denial!
So, opinions? And just post anonymously if you’re too wimpy to post with your name. ;-)
**Edited to add: I received two emails questioning if I would be “hiding” the personal blog. The answer to that is no. I just won’t be attaching it to my profiles all over the net and having it on my business card. My other blog was never “secret” - all of my friends in the SEO community read it - but it wasn’t attached to my company name (as a matter of fact, sugarrae was never mentioned once in all the years it was up) and it is just different than handing a stranger at a conference a business card and having them see a poll on whether the toilet paper goes flap on the top or flap on the bottom when they first arrive. ;-)

Hands down #3. I like your Sybil like personalities ;) I want to hear the word fuck more and not at the cost of giving up the SEO talk. You have no option but to split your blogs… because really your blog(s) are all about me and what I want ;) I mean really, what are best friends for.
To further add to your confusion, while I think you need two blogs I think you need a whole new name and shouldn’t necessarily resurrect the old blog domain. Start fresh.
Disclaimer: I am deathly ill, if this post makes no sense I can’t be held responsible.
#3 for sure. While this blog is great for info on the biz, I miss updates from your life. How else can I keep track of what is going on with you?
Yep…I’m in the #3 camp too!
I’m sure my opinion is worth less than 2c but I like 3 too. Just don’t loose this wicked design!
This design is here to stay, regardless of what I do - and those who saw my old blogs can tell you, wicked blog designs are standard for me :)
Your dilema is very similar to mine (and George Costanza’s)…. “Worlds are Coliding” is never good.

Create two blogs. One about gambling, thongs, whatever and one about personal stuff. ;-)
#3 - no doubt about it! I love “both of you” LOL :D
Go with a subdomain. Despite clearly explaining on my blog that 90% of my “off topic” posts are publicly conducted experiments it’s the #1 complaint I still get. So I’m going to create a couple of subdomains.
I would say number three, too. I’d like to hear more about thongs while you brandish the word “fuck” about. Besides, I don’t know what SEO means.
I want a place where I can say f*ck and talk about my boxer shorts showing also. My SEO blog sometimes takes on a darker tone and I have been known to delete posts.
Solution: Leave this blog for professional stuff and fire up a new blog on a new domain where you can be a bad girl. :)
Yo graywolf, I am timing your posts to blogs, you should be commenting in mine in about 2.5 days.
>>>it’s the #1 complaint I still get
Oh HELL no. People must either think you’re much nicer or think I’m much meaner - if someone sent me an email to complain about the topic of my blog posts, I’d send them an invoice for being stupid. ;-)
I guess we better go with #3. I don’t have to worry about the extra work of a second blog - that’s your problem - and I get to read about thongs! It’s the perfect solution for me.
>People must either think you’re much nicer
must be because I don’t use the word f*ck often enough ;-)
There is something really sexy about girls who say f*ck, in fact women have no idea how good a badgirl blog can rank if done correctly. :)
This girl here: ( http://raspberrysundae.blogspot.com/ ) really made some people insane when I interviewed her on my blog but it is refreshing to see women who are not afraid to play around with words and ideas.
I think Rae is just getting bored with it like the rest of us…oh well.
The interviews are cool but they also have a shelf life, what next?
I wish you could keep it all on the same blog, but if not I guess #3.
I have to go w/ a combo of 3 & 5. If you think two separate blogs are the right thing for your business, so be it….but I think “fuck” should feel at home in both places.
I’d keep it all together on one blog and just go wild - an SEO blog is not incompatible with a personal blog. I think that Daggle.com and CartoonBarry.com and to an extent, DaveN and WebGuerrilla and Oilman are equal parts personal and professional.
I’d only be worried if your goal is to get business via the blog, and even then, who wouldn’t want to read about IMing porn to their dad?
#3 is the only way to go!
I say rant, go wild pull out your guns and start shooting. SEO is the wild west. BTW I a plan to bring my A game to the next poker game!
thongs.sugarrae.com? Works for me.
Rae, why dont you just add a “strickly” SEO category?
I would personally rather see all the “garbage posts” instead of the SEO related ones.
Girlie… 3 and 5 would be cool. Either one. The “real” question should be… “which model would YOU prefer to do?” Come on… let’s be honest, *whatever* you choose we’ll be there to follow along and read your crazy stuff.
So choose something that fucking suits YOU first and foremost. *FUCK* all of us! Seriously. We’re with you whatever you “go for” ;-)
Keep on rock’in!
WTF!? #3 says split the blog up.
I say go with what you want.
Anyone at Ask that has worked with you already knows what they’re getting into. What you say or don’t say here won’t sway a decision they’ve already made.
And do you really want to work with clients that don’t like your style? Hell no! Damn the nay-sayers. Full steam ahead!
I’ve been thinking about this lately too, and my vote is to ahead and post personal stuff, funny stories, etc. Didn’t read your old blog, but here’s my 2c:
1 - A few off-topic posts won’t turn away readers, and could improve a blogger’s ability to relate to readers.
2 - It’s not worth the time/effort to set up and maintain a separate personal blog. There’s too many other projects to work on.
As a side note, I’d wager that it’s more beneficial for female bloggers to post off-topic stuff than for guys.
