What a truly useful post, and even though I have come to it more than a year later, it is still quite relevant and helpful.

By the way, just a little constructive criticism for those experts who replied to the questions, why is it that several of you do not provide an email subscription option for blog updates on your blogs? Not everyone uses a reader, including me, and when I went to your blogs with the genuine interest of reading your blog on a regular basis, I had to click out because there was not email option.

re:Nofollow links have value if they bring traffic.

I absolutely think, that NOFOLLOWs bring value in addition to traffic. Nofollow just tells us that no Page Rank is passed – but heck – do normal users care about PR?

My point is, that a nofollow link from a trusted and relevant page does indicate a valid vote (see Wikipedia)

@Rae: Thank you for the great article. And you have a good point – all links have value, if they bring traffic. Too many people are obsessing about “SEO value” of the link. My point is: Link Building for SEO is hard work, but if done properly the links them self can bring a lot of traffic.

If the only “value” you see in a link is if it is followed or not, then you’re two years or more behind a lot of your competitors. Nofollow links have value if they bring traffic.

Great to see what the supper stars are up to! This is a post that I will be referring to often. @ Indianapolis SEO – Its true that different avenues will open and close, but posts like this get the creative juices flowing.

What I got most out of this post is to research the open content options related to your niche. That way your links are on target and the sites are probably not going to be as abused.

This is a really nice post, too bad I found it after it’s exactly one year old and much of the content is outdated. Sites like wikipedia use nofollow now along with many of the other websites listed. It does stimulate the mind to think about various channels for links.
